How to take a good reading, what each message means, and how to reach us.

Taking a reading

  1. Remove any vibration damper from the strings.
  2. Hold the phone 2–5 cm from the string bed, somewhere quiet.
  3. Tap the centre of the strings with a pen, or the handle of another racquet.
  4. Keep tapping until five taps are in. The app averages them and shows how far apart they were.

Calibration

Right after a restring, open the racquet, tap Calibrate, and take one five-tap set. The tension you entered as "strung at" becomes the reference, so readings follow your stringer's scale from then on. When you restring, choose Restrung from the racquet's menu and calibrate again.

Without calibration you see the physics estimate. It reads lower than the stringer's number, because a freshly strung racquet holds noticeably less tension than the machine pulled.

What the messages mean

MessageWhat to do
Too quietTap a little firmer, or bring the phone closer to the strings.
Too noisy: no clear pingMove somewhere quieter, away from voices, music and fans.
The ping died too fastTake off the vibration damper. Racquets with built-in dampers can't be read.
Outside this racquet's rangeCheck the racquet's sport, head size and strings in Edit racquet.
Inconsistent: retakeThe five taps were more than 2% apart in pitch. Tap the same spot near the centre each time.
Microphone access is offTurn it on in Settings › Tension Tap › Microphone.

Export

Settings › Export history (CSV) shares every reading as a spreadsheet file: racquet, strings, date, pitch, spread, and the tension in lb and kg.

No racquet to hand?

On the measure screen, the input menu offers Sample taps: recordings of real taps that run through the same measurement, so you can try every screen.
